Big school holidays storm could bring snow to sea level

It's going to be a freezing start to the school holidays with one of the "most significant snow storms in recent years" lining up the South Island this week.

Severe gales and icy conditions were also forecast.

MetService said a "very cold southerly" was expected to hit Southland on Monday night or early Tuesday morning then head north.

The country is preparing for its worst winter storm of the year with rain, snow and gales set to batter much of New Zealand.
As the first week of the school holidays gets underway MetService is warning the vicious cold front is expected to hit tomorrow and last for the next four days.

Oh Joy. Three kids holed up indoors! Guess we'll have to have to use our imaginations for indoor fun.

With any luck it'll snow hard enough that I don't have to go to work!

Wishing you joy with the kids Martin.

As a homeschooling mum of three, I have advice Martin! Although I also reckon your wife will be completely on top of all this already

Depends how old your kiddies are but my boys are happy for hours with:

Camps made with sheets and pillows, lots of books/audio books, Lego, colouring/drawing and dress up/make believe play. And wrap up warm and get out there in the garden for snowman-making fun!!!!

Obviously plenty of tasty, healthy food makes a BIG difference to happiness levels (for mum too!)

And you play a big part too, Martin, even if you still have to go to work - when you get home, smile and embrace the messy chaos as evidence of a joyful day, ask your wife what you can do to help with dinner, and tidy up when your precious bundles are asleep (or do it as a team before bedtime book which is what we do!) Enjoy!!!!!
