Star Wars has been a part of my life since I was 7. It was Star Wars that took the traditional "damsel in distress" figure, and turned her into a decisive leader, and a person who leads from the front, laser rifle in hand, berating her rescuers for their lack of a plan.
That figure, Princess Leia Organa, was realised by Carrie Fisher, taking the role from haughty but innocent white clad princess, to metal-bikini clad sex icon, to the sad but dignified leader of the latest movie in the series.
Outside of her movie character, Fisher battled with challenges and addictions, but always maintained a strong wit and sense of humour.
