Mexico was hit by its strongest earthquake in more than a century, shaking buildings in the capital and killing dozens of people in southern states.
The tremor brought memories of a 1985 earthquake in Mexico City that killed thousands, though early indications were that the toll from last night’s quake, which struck off the Pacific coast hundreds of miles south of the capital, won’t be on that scale. Local media cited an initial death toll of 32, with information about fatalities and damage still coming in, along with warnings about the risk of tsunami waves. Concern that the quake could further hobble a sluggish economy drove the peso lower in early trading.
